You know how people are becoming more and more aware of what they put into their bodies? Like organically grown produce versus genetically modified fruits and veggies? Our food choices fuel bodies so it is important to only put good things into them. The same could be said for what we use on our skin, which is also absorbed into our bodies.

Makeup is used by most women everyday. It is part of their daily routine. Wake up, brush your teeth, get your coffee going and do your makeup before the day’s work. Sound familiar? Just like produce, there are both good and bad ingredients in makeup. In fact, the dangers of chemicals and unwanted ingredients in makeup are quite alarming. Especially considering that unlike fruits and veggies, makeup isn’t something that just grows naturally. It is dependent on chemical compounds and human creation. But that doesn’t mean all makeup is bad. Did you know that many mascaras brands contain an ingredient called Triethanolamine, aka TEA? Today, we are going to give you the tea, on TEA. 

TEA is used in many cosmetic products to balance pH levels, act as a cleansing base and is also used as an emulsifier. While that might not sound too bad, take a look at the other products TEA is found in. The compound is used in sunscreen, laundry and dishwashing detergents, hand sanitizers and even printing ink.

Here’s a little more beauty industry tea on the compound: TEA is quite common in mascaras. It can be found in most of your favorites and is a normalized ingredient. Recent research, however, has proved that TEA can have negative effects when used in cosmetic products.

Through repeated use, TEA causes dryness, irritation and allergic reactions. It can also become toxic when absorbed into the body over a long period of time. This is on top of the natural wear and tear makeup causes your face on a daily basis. When TEA is eliminated from mascara products, our lashes would be a lot stronger and healthier. The problem is, all of your favorite mascaras contain the compound: Too Faced, YSL, Lancome, L’Oreal. All these major companies add TEA to their products.
